Panda 20 + EMD + Penguin 3 Google Update

Google has rolled out four updates in the last couple of days and created a huge buzz amidst the search engine optimizers.  The updates are as follows:

  1. Panda 20 ( Panda 3.9.2 ) –  27th September, 2012
  2. EMD ( Exact Match Domain) Algorithm update -  28th September, 2012
  3. Google Image Search Ranking Update – 1st October, 2012
  4. Penguin 3 Update -  5th October, 2012

Based on several case studies, here are the factors behind the updates and how to overcome/recover these updates.

1. Panda 20:

Panda 20 created a major impact of more than 2.4% of search queries, and this was targeted only for English queries.   Panda 20 was targeted on

  • Less Content
  • Content farms / Poor quality content
  • Bounce Rate
  • User Experience  ( Improper Ad placement)
2. EMD – Exact Match Domain Update:

Exact Match Domain (EMD) Algorithm update was targeted towards the rising usage of keyword stuffed domain names.    The EMD update was targeted towards low quality or potentially poor sites that rank for the keyword match in domain names.  The SERP (Search Engine Results Pages) were impacted nearly 0.6%.

 3. Image Search Update:

Image Search update has been rolled out following the Google panda and Exact Domain match updates.

 4. Penguin 3:

Penguin 3 algorithm update had impacted less than 0.4% of the search queries. Most of the sites have noticed a decline in traffic. Unlike panda, Penguin was targeted towards the link-spam and keyword stuffing.  Sites penalized or dropped by Penguin were supposed to have the following:

  • Link-spamming
  • Low quality links
  • Over-optimization
  • Keyword stuffing

Last week, Google had rolled out pretty huge updates which shook the entire SERP.  Panda + EMD + Penguin recovery steps will be updated shortly. Happy Blogging!!!

  1. Google Penguin

Found your page through Wikipedia and just wanted to thank you for the detailed info on these released algorithms. Us over at SEO-Haven have noticed since the EMD updates, is that making changes to your meta tags to contain less duplicate keyword phrases actually has a big effect on most penalized sites and recovers some of the lost rankings. Maybe that will help some of your readers.

    Again, thanks for your article.
